The Barbizon/63 apartment house is a little slice of New York history. Originally designed by Murgatroyd & Ogden, the large hotel was intended for women only, with men permitted only in the lobby space. Interestingly, this wasn’t the only building done by M&O with this separation of sexes concept. There was a similar story (alternating floors) at the Allerton Hotel, built 3 years prior to the Barbizon in Chicago, Illinois. M&O also did the Barbizon Plaza Hotel on Central Park South. That building is now the “Trump Parc” property at 106 Central Park South. (more…)
