First constructed as a lying-in hospital using funds donated by J.P. Morgan, Rutherford Place has finally been converted from its latest incarnation as a rental complex to 127 high-end residential condominiums on the north edge of Stuyvesant Square. The 9-story building’s design displays neo-Classical and Italian Renaissance influences, dates to 1902 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. By contrast, clean and contemporary lines define the building’s renovated interiors. For those who loathe the repetitiveness of unit layouts in many new condo projects, this building may just do the trick: no two of this building’s units have precisely the same floor plan. Ceiling heights range from 7.6 to 17 feet, and configurations span simplexes, duplexes, triplexes and – wait for it – quadriplexes. In fact, some of the studios endeavor to solve the inherent live-sleep problems associated with a studio setup with a sleeping loft that hovers above the living room and kitchen area (hence those 7.6-foot ceilings).
